Organizations are coming to recognize the important role that human networks can play in discovery and innovation. Networks are creating new potential for cost-effective, distributed collaboration — and are beginning to change the way we work.

However, the business world is still learning how to harness the true power of networks. While "social networks" is a buzz phrase, most business applications of this concept have produced little value — often because they are not designed around a focused business objective. And yet, even networks that have clear purpose and relevant benefits wither because the sponsors underestimate the requirements necessary to sustain member interest and give the network an enduring "heartbeat."
